What Is AAHA Accreditation — and Why It Matters When Choosing a Vet

What AAHA is

AAHA (the American Animal Hospital Association), founded in 1933, runs the only voluntary accreditation program for companion-animal hospitals in North America. "Voluntary" matters: hospitals aren't required to participate — the ones that do have chosen to be held to a higher standard.

What accreditation evaluates

Accredited hospitals are periodically evaluated on roughly 900 standards, covering:

• Anesthesia safety — monitoring during procedures, pain management protocols
• Medical records — complete, traceable patient histories
• Equipment — imaging, laboratory, sterilization facilities
• Surgical and sterile technique standards
• Staff training and continuing education

What it tells you

AAHA accreditation is a quality floor — it means the hospital accepts outside scrutiny and meets a high bar on facilities and protocols. That's especially relevant when your pet needs surgery, anesthesia, or complex care.

What it doesn't tell you

Accreditation isn't the same as "best," and it can't replace your own judgment:

• Many excellent clinics simply haven't pursued accreditation, often for cost or size reasons
• It measures protocols and facilities — not how patiently a particular vet communicates or how gently they handle your pet
• It's one strong signal, not the only one
